From tanking HRV scores to impairing sleep, drinking has been found to affect performance and recovery in a variety of ways. We’re not saying all triathletes are teetotalers, but more and more are becoming wise to the fact that exercise and alcohol don’t mix. Now go practice your transitions again – if Taylor Swift can pull off 16 costume changes in one show, you can nail wetsuit removal and bike mounts and dismounts. During that time, Swift rehearsed the show relentlessly so that when the big day finally came, she knew exactly what she was going to do, when she was going to do it, and how to deal with the hiccups that came along the way. From costumes to nutrition and hydration, Swift dialed in her plan during a month-long stint in Glendale, Arizona, where the tour kicked off in March 2023. (Photo: Buda Mendes/TAS23/Getty Images) Nothing new on race show dayĪnother reason we know Swift is one of us: Meticulous race-day rehearsal. Our beginner’s Olympic-distance training plan will feel quite easy in comparison.) Listen, we’re not saying a full wardrobe of spandex automatically makes Swift a triathlete. (Have your people call our people, Taylor. Not gonna lie – if she’s got that kind of fitness during a performance, we’re kind of curious as to what kind of splits she’d clock at an Olympic-distance tri. That’s why Swift’s pro-level prep included running on the treadmill every day while singing the entire Eras setlist aloud, followed by strength training and dance lessons. Go for a run with your headphones and sing “Love Story” on full volume, then tell us how it goes for you. In fact, go ahead and try it right now (we’ll wait). That takes physical and mental endurance – you try running across a massive stage while belting out tunes at the top of your lungs. Swift performed a 40-plus song setlist each night, which included intense choreography that made most people tired just watching. “I wanted to play a show that was longer than they ever thought it would be, because that makes me feel good leaving the stadium.” The Key Workout: Treadmill Singing “They had to work really hard to get the tickets,” she told Time. Swift is no different, saying she wanted to put on a show worthy of her fans’ adoration. It’s easy for most people to skip a workout in favor of sleeping in, but not so much when you’ve committed to your big goal to serve as a role model for your kids or to prove to someone (even yourself) that you’re made of some pretty tough stuff. It’s the advice every triathlete hears at some point: Know your “why” for taking on such a big feat. But as it turns out, proper preparation pays off on both race day and show day. Sometimes, we (the royal “we,” as in “triathletes and pop stars,” who are now one and the same) get a little overzealous, laying out the training plan the second we click the “register” button. This sentiment feels familiar to just about every triathlete, who has likely gone in for a race under-trained and sworn to do things the “right” way the next time around. “I finally, for the very first time, physically prepared correctly.” “I knew this tour was harder than anything I’d ever done before by a long shot,” she told Time. We have the proof: Training for Swift’s Eras Tour began six months in advance. She may not be a triathlete, but she’s definitely one of us. The 33-year-old pop queen has been everywhere this year, from sold-out arenas to movie screens to Monday Night Football, and for her omnipresent efforts, Time magazine named her their “2023 Person of the Year.” In an interview with the publication, she revealed her training regimen for her sold-out Eras tour – and it sounds a whole lot like Swift has some Type-A triathlete tendencies. It finally happened – the world of endurance and the world of Taylor Swift have intersected, and not just when we’re making a clever play on words about Triathlon Taylor (Knibb).
